Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery
Updated On: Dec 23, 2009 (15:22:00)

Happy Halloween from your Fairbanks Firefighters.

CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS, CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES!

Please have a safe and happy halloween.  While out trick-or-treating with your children please watch traffic and ensure you are clearly visible to passing motorists.

As a reminder, daylight savings time ends Saturday night (October 31st) /  Sunday morning (November 1st).  It is time to "fall back" and set your clocks back from 2:00 AM to 1:00 AM.  We urge you to take this opportunity and check all your smoke detectors to ensure they are opperational and CHANGE THE BATTERIES!  Working smoke detectors are your families best defense against death or injury from a fire in your home.  Most fire deaths we respond to in the City of Fairbanks are found to have missing or disabled smoke detectors. Many people are alive and well in our community because they were able to escape from a residential fire safely due to working smoke detectors.  There is no single more important step to protecting your family then ensuring you have plenty of properly installed smoke detectors and following up by changing the batteries twice a year when you change your clock.

If you have questions or need asisstance with smoke detector related questions please call our Fire Marshall at 450-6600 during business hours.  The Fairbanks Fire Department has detectors free of charge and will even come and install them!

October is Fire Prevention Month, please take this opportunity to review a few items with your children and family members;

  • How to call 911.  Ensure they know their name and address.
  • Make sure they know what your smoke detectors sound like and what to do if they go off.
  • Have and practice escape plans from your home.  Be sure to designate a meeting place!
  • Crawl low in smoke and do not open doors that are hot to the touch, look for an alternate exit.
  • Never to touch or play with matches.
  • Stop, Drop and Roll if their clothes catch on fire.
  • Safety in the home is everyones responsibility.

For more information contact your local fire department!

Remember.....be careful using your cell phone while driving and in Alaska it is illegal to text and drive.
