Local Firefighters honored those who fell on 9-11 with a memorial service. The rememberance, sponsored by the Farthest North Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (FOOLS) was held at the Fairbanks Fire Department Station 1. The ceremony included comments by Ben Fleagle, President of the local FOOLS chapter and a keynote address emhasizing this years theme "Never Forget Means Never Foregetting" by FTWW Fire Department AC Dave Halbrooks.
The crowd of about 100 was silent while a bell was rung 5-5-5-5 signifying a firefighters final alarm, followed by a moment of silence marking the time the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Members of the FOOLS then read the names of 453 public safety personnel (fire, police and ems) who perished on 9-11 as a candle was lit for each of the fallen firefighters.
Dennis Stephens played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes as is tradition at firefighter funnerals. Dan Grimes, of Airport Police and Fire, closed the ceremony by reading the firefighters prayer. A special thanks from all area firefighters to those who attended to pay their respects.
