FAIRBANKS — The Fairbanks Fire Department was called to a fire at the construction site of the Ruth Burnett Fish Hatchery early Saturday morning.
Dispatchers received multiple calls just before 5 a.m. of a building fire at the corner of Hilton and Wilber streets.
Firefighters arrived on scene within five minutes to discover flames coming from the northeast corner of the building and heavy smoke coming from several windows. It took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, and crews remained on scene for several hours afterward to make sure the flames were extinguished.
Damage to the office building for the project’s contractor, Alaska Mechanical Inc., is estimated at $75,000. No one was at the site at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Mutual aid was provided by the University and Fort Wainwright fire departments.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Ernie Misewicz, assistant chief for the Fairbanks Fire Department, said that fire should not have any effect on construction of the proposed $45 million hatchery.
